This had to be done because unfortunately my final sequence was lost and I therefore had to start again. Although this happened and did frustrate me I nevertheless picked myself up and began the sequence again. I am pleased with my work and feel I have improved it hugely.

This is my final piece -
7. Looking back at your preliminary task (the continuity editing task) what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full project?

My preliminary task was involving filming and editing a character opening a door, crossing a room and sitting down in a chair opposite another character, with whom he/she engages conversation with. This task had to demonstrate a match on action - shot/reverse shot and the 180 degree rule.

At the very start of media I had no clue in how to film, edit or produce. When given the Preliminary task I was excited but also quite confused on how to do anything. However during the Preliminary task I learnt the 180 degree rule which was over the shoulder shot. Also I learnt how to compose myself and try and keep a straight face as I was the actress in this along with Kelly who was in my group. During the Preliminary task I realised that having dialogue was the hardest thing, as it was hard to keep a straight face and stay in character when trying to recite lines, although they were a few it was not easy to say them and staying in character at the same time.

Here is my Preliminary task: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dWq-I8fqAVI

As I was acting in the Preliminary task I also volunteered to act in my thriller opening also. This was very daunting to me as I feel I am not exactly the best actress however as time was ticking and we did not know who to ask to play the role I took it upon myself. The one thing I feel that has progressed for me in this entire process of the full project is being confident in acting, editing and filming. I feel I have gained so much confidence from taking part in both the Preliminary and Thriller Opening as an actress. However acting in the Thriller Opening was a hundred times more daunting for me as I am not used to being in front of the camera - this however was overcome later on and I felt I could be in front of the camera all day! I have learnt so much in editing especially. At the beginning I did not know anything - I was useless at trying to put our Preliminary task together on Final cut express. Now however I am able to editing shots, change colours such as making all the shots black and white. Also using the 'Colour corrector' and 'Chrome Keyer' to highlight certain colours in order to show the audience specific areas in which I wanted them to observe. Also being able to conduct my own soundtrack for my Thriller opening was absolute fun, as we were able to ask a friend to compose a piece which we then used Garageband to add in more effects to the soundtrack. During the minor editing of the Preliminary task I was unaware of how to use Final cut fully - however for the Thriller Opening I was able to edit everything! I am so amazed at how far I have come in Media and how much I have learnt that I can use in everyday life with technology and different software's which I did not know how to use or know of before starting Media.

Over the past seven months I have been on an immense journey with Media and I have learnt so many new skills about myself and my ability but also how to work with others, produce certain projects and to not give up when not mastering a certain technique or software. Media has given me a total new outlook on software's the internet, films and even life! The skills and techniques I have learnt will enable me to use them in the future which I am very proud of achieving. I have gained the confidence in many areas and aspects and I am highly confident that I will be able to use all the experience I have gained. From the Preliminary task to the Thriller Opening - it has been an outstanding overall experience and it just shows how much progress you are able to make if you focus and allow yourself to learn new and wonderful skills.

Media has been the most challenging subject I have come across. This is because when starting the subject you do not realise how tough it is in terms of learning skills, software and equipment. I found the software and equipment the hardest to come to terms with, but now I am fully capable of putting the skills I have learnt into practice for both software and equipment.

As you can see on the right there are 3 images of myself and my group using the tripod and camera which we all had trouble using at first. At first I thought the tripod would not be so hard to operate but of course I was wrong. Although I did not film much of the difficult parts of the opening such as the panning scene, trying to film certain shots such as filming the homages, it is not easy to keep a steady hand.
However I did use the tripod and camera when filming the paused scene of 'Fatal Attraction'. For this I used a technique of an elastic band which you attach to the tripod handle. This was highly effective and made it easier to use the tripod. It resulted in a smooth movement.

All the above software were very useful to me in constructing this product. Garageband was highly useful in creating extra sound for our soundtrack, it allowed us to play around with it in order to find the appropriate sound which suited the rest of our soundtrack in which our friend helped us produce. At the beginning of constructing this product, myself and Final Cut Express did not get along at all! I could not come to terms with how to use it, I found it very difficult in trying to edit certain things and putting things together. However now I absolutely love Final Cut Express! It is an amazing piece of software which has allowed me to produce such a product. At times however the software would not co-operate and would erase my sequence which I had to pick myself up and start the sequence again. Excluding this, I have learnt how to put shots together, add in titles and edit each shot individually. It has been a challenge using Final Cut Express but this is one piece of technology and software that I feel I am expert with now. Livetype is what I used to create the Titles for my film opening. It was not easy to use but I eventually was able to use it along with the help of my group. Paint was also a great help in constructing my product because I used it to edit different shots and to crop unwanted parts in screen grabs. The Macs were difficult to use in the beginning but as the months flew by I can officially and proudly say I am able to use Macs and cooperate with them using these specific software's.

YouTube is the most amazing website. I did not realise that YouTube could be used for so many different uses. Once I had completed rough edits and different presentation tasks, YouTube became a best friend in that it allowed me to upload and transfer it to my Blog. I have learnt so much with YouTube in that I now know how to annotate and how to add different effects and notes to videos which I am very proud of.

As for Blogger, it has been a total eye opener for me. At the beginning of media I thought that the idea of having a blog was bizarre and not something I would think of doing. However my view of blogs has completely changed! I think that having a blog is so useful and allows you to express yourself in a variety of ways. Also I have learnt that blogger is a place where you can keep up to date with work and to keep a structure and build up a entire group of posts gradually in order to create a full blog which I find absolutely outstanding. Blogger has given me a insight into what can be done using sites such as this and I definitely will be using Blogger in the future as I find it very useful.

DOOR SCENE HAS BEEN REMOVED

This is a video which I have annotated certain shots to highlight the ways in which my Film Opening links to other similar films in order to attract the particular Audience I have previously identified. My annotations refer to generic conventions, similarities with other movies and what I have identified as the unique selling point of my imaginary film.

I feel that the unique selling point of my film would be the constant questioning raised by the target audience. These are some of the questions asked by those who have viewed my Thriller Opening:

"Why does she smudge her lipstick?"
"Why is she copying the lady on the poster?"
"Why did she circle the man on the newspaper?"
"Why are there empty photo frames and a upside down clock?"
"Why are there words on her door and rope?"
"Where does she go? Why did she take the dress?"

These questions being raised means that this film opening was successful in attempting to attract the audiences attention. This is because my main aim was to ensure that questions would be raised. Questions being raised by the audiences means that they are engaged and that they are trying to figure out what the answer is - also questions being raised means that the audience/viewer will want to watch more in order to determine why certain parts of the opening were done the way they were.

I had some criticism on my Thriller opening which were pointed directly at the character needing to be more involved in more shots because they felt that they could not engage with the character more. Also the ending to the opening is 'TOO' mysterious some said. I have taken all criticism into account and will ensure that I will not make these mistakes in the future.

My film contains many homages which give direct links to similar films such as 'Fatal Attraction' and 'The Postman Always Rings Twice'. Overall I do feel it has been successful in that the audience are attracted. Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02448519510836898216noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1579410365039606724.post-22526171882710043242013-03-24T10:39:00.000-07:002013-03-24T10:39:13.637-07:00Evaluation - Question Four4. Who would be the audience for your media product?

Target Audience

There are different types of target audience, for Thrillers this varies because of the age. However target audience is based on also gender and background. Majority of Thriller films always have a Sub genre. For example the famous film 'The Lodger' directed by Alfred Hitchcock. This film has the Sub genre's Crime, Drama and Mystery. Here is a link to the overview of 'The Lodger': http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0017075/ .

Audiences

After researching into what type of audiences watch Film noirs I came to a firm conclusion that I would give Furor the certificate rating of 18. The reasons why I came to this conclusion is because after asking different aged audiences, those aged 15 - 17 years of age felt that watching a Film noir would be in their view 'boring' as in today's society films are expected to be in colour, therefore black and white is not appealing to these age groups. However those whom I asked who were aged 18 and above, said they would watch a Film noir as it is how films began and it is history behind the films of today! I feel my film Furor is definitely appropriate for a certificate rating of 18 because it does contain forms of violence and sexual nature therefore I feel it would not be suitable for those of a younger age. People above even in their 40's or 50's would be interested in Film noirs because it is around their time that Film noirs were a big demand. Men would be highly into Film noirs because of the femme fatale and seductive, attractive women - women also would be interested because it goes against the typical stereotype of men always being the main focus.

Film Noir Target Audience

The genre 'Film Noir' was created in the 1940's and 50's - therefore people who were around this time would be the ones who remembered the most about Film noir and who were most interested. The ratings for Film noir films are usually 15 or 18 and above so this means it is generally aimed at a more mature audience who have the ability to understand the films to their fullness.

The similarities between my character and 'Kathie Moffat' is that they both are seductive characters and both typically smoke which is very iconic in Thriller Film Noir's and also the red lipstick which represents a seductive nature. Another similarity between my character and Cora Smith is the white dress also.
These differences are that my character rejects the idea of men being dominant and men taking control. She has a strong back bone and a clear love for being a strong independent woman. She does not represent women who should go along with the stereotype of women falling to their feet for men. Instead she represents those women who refuse to go down this path, and would rather stand tall and protect women's rights and uphold the independence women deserve. Also many femme fatale characters have blonde hair whereas my character had dark brown hair and this changes the typical conventions of a femme fatale character. My character is always in control and very manipulative when it comes to men. This also changes the typical stereotype of how the media view women to be easy going and acceptable to men.
The title of my Thriller Opening is 'Furor'. Furor means 'rage' or 'fury' - this sums up the entire opening and also the main character (antagonist). Myself and my group came to a conclusion of naming the opening 'Furor' because we felt it was mysterious and gave the opening an immediate edge. Although we knew that this would raise questions to the audience we felt that this gave the audience more of a reason to want to watch the opening to find out what it is about. We felt that having 'Furor' as the title of the film would make the opening more interesting as it is not usually what occurs in thrillers, the antagonist being the main focus and also the title describing the mind state of the character. The title font and style was inspired by the film 'Se7en'.
The reason why the title/titles were created in this font and style is because the font is eerie and gives the opening an edge because of its style. The colour of the font was deliberately chosen as white because this shows purity and innocence which deliberately contradicts who the character is and what their personality is like.

The setting and location of my Thriller Opening was in a bedroom. We chose a bedroom as the setting and location because we felt this fitted in well with our ideas for the Thriller. The bedroom consisted of ordinary everyday furniture and objects. However we added unusual aspects to the bedroom such as an upside down clock which pointed at '12:12' - this was significant and symbolic because it showed how precise and what mind state the character was in. We also had empty photo frames, which showed the emptiness of the character and her life - all of this gives the audience an insight to the character. We also had the film 'Fatal Attraction' paused at 12:12 to also show the mind state of the character. Also the lighting in the room was deliberately applied - we closed the curtains in order to block out any natural light and used a LED light to use specifically in different areas which we felt needed to be highlighted more than others. Also we limited the possessions owned by the character because she is of a lower class status and her being of a low status and unfortunate is what drives her to want to get revenge upon her ex - boyfriend whom won the lottery - she is also heavily influenced by Thriller genres. The overall setting is very mysterious and eerie and hidden which reveals a lot about the characters life and the way she is.
This was because white symbolises purity and innocence. This was a deliberate contradiction because the character I played was not innocence nor was she pure. Also the second dress which was used was a purple one. This is because purple symbolises power and dominance which is what she possesses. Using the white dress as the main costume was highly important, this is because we used this as a homage from the film 'Fatal Attraction' where the woman wore a white dress. We went against typical Thriller conventions by using a white dress because typically in a 'Film Noir' the woman is usually asQuart and Auster describe this relationship as, "a world where women, often in the central role, were glamorous and dangerous – seductive sirens whose every action was marked by duplicity and aimed at satisfying a desire for wealth and power – while the male protagonists were frequently weak, confused and morally equivocal, susceptible to temptation, and incapable of acting heroically." Using a white dress is the opposite of white represents, the idea of purity and innocence - whereas the character whom I play is the complete opposite of pure and innocent - we felt this gave the Thriller Opening a twist to the story. Another prop which we used was a knife, the reason for this was because we took another homage from 'Fatal Attraction' (as you can see on the right) and my character being obsessed with Thrillers, wanted to duplicate this image. This highlighted the unsettled mind of the character and the mind state she was in. The red lipstick as part of the costume was important because the red lipstick shows the seductive nature to the character and also this is typical in a 'Film Noir' film. However when my character was applying the lipstick, she began applying it neatly and then smudged it. This was deliberately done because this revealed the twisted and unsettled mind of the character. We felt that this would raise questions from the audience which is what we wanted.
During filming I learnt many ways of using the Tripod, and different techniques such as when panning, to use an elastic band on the tripod to give a smooth, level and easy pan. Also when filming we took a variety of different shots, such as long shot, close up, low angle shot and an effective panning of the entire room to show the audience what setting and environment the film is being set in - also because the setting played a major part in my Thriller Opening. The editing allowed me to feel free to explore what I could do using 'Final Cut Express'. For example on the right you can see the editing I did to the shot of the dress. This was hard to master at first but I got to grips with the 'Colour Corrector' and 'Chroma Keyer' in order to highlight the colour of the dress. I decided to make the entire opening black and white, this is because this is a typical 'Film Noir' aspect and also allowed me to highlight the important colours of the opening. I changed brightness and contrast for every shot, I wanted to highlight shadows, colours and the light areas and I feel I successfully did this. I enjoyed using 'Final Cut Express' as it contained many effects to which I could experiment with to get the best results.
The story of my Thriller Opening is of a Femme Fatale character who wants to get revenge against a former boyfriend. My character sees in a local newspaper that this former 'rich' boyfriend has won the lottery. Immediately she is jealous and feels that it is her who deserves the winnings. As her mind state is very twisted and manipulative she sets out to kill her former boyfriend out of rage and fury in order to retrieve his winnings. My character enjoys duplicating characters from Thriller Films and experimenting with different plots and techniques. As she duplicates one of the woman characters from 'Fatal Attraction'. As you can see on the right, we took a shot of my character reading the newspaper and observing her former boyfriends winnings. My Thriller Opening sets the story up effectively and clearly because the costume and props immediately reveal the Femme Fatale nature. The black and white also immediately shows the audience that this is a 'Film Noir' as 'Film Noir's are typically black and white. We made it clear in this Thriller Opening that the character is someone who gets what she wants when she wants it. Also because of the way in which we set up and projected the setting and props around the bedroom, this revealed the unsettled mind of my character and gave the audience a clear insight to what her mind state level was.
Genre And How The Opening Suggests It

The genre of my opening is Thriller, with the sub genre being 'Film Noir'. The sub genre Film Noir is clearly shown by the characters clothes and the obvious homages highlighted in the opening. Such as posters and props. The opening is very mysterious and raises questions to the audience - such as 'Why are certain colours shown?' , 'Why is she copying a poster?' - these questions satisfy us because we know that the audience have engaged with the opening and a that the use of the homages have created a firm and clear tense atmosphere. The opening suggests the genre throughout because we constantly reveal something new and something unusual such a props, homages, costume and the characters behavior and actions.

How The Characters Are Introduced

In our thriller opening we only introduced one main character, this was because we deliberately wanted the audience to be aware that there is only one character who is introduced in the opening and that they are the main focus throughout. At the start of our opening we immediately introduce the main character as you can see on the right. We did the shot close up because we felt that it gave an immense focus on the character, also the lighting was deliberately done in this way to highlight the character and give more effect to the shot. The eye opening shot we felt gave a kick to the opening, this is because it showed some form of possessive nature and a unsettled person. We chose to challenge the thriller conventions by introducing the antagonist first and not the protagonist, this is because we wanted to make it really clear whom the audience are to focus and pay attention to throughout.
This is my rough edit of my thriller opening, I have many improvements to make which I am working on and also taking on any criticism in order to make it better and more defined. Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02448519510836898216noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1579410365039606724.post-57444538131885527782013-02-11T07:57:00.000-08:002013-02-15T04:02:41.771-08:00Background pictures whilst filming Myself and my group spent weeks preparing to film for our thriller opening, we finally filmed our thriller opening. We focused on the setting, lighting and props for our thriller.

Setting

For our setting we used a friends bedroom which fitted the exact criteria for our thriller opening, this was because the positioning of the room was perfect and allowed us to be able to re-arrange the way in which we wanted it if needed, whereas filming outdoors would of restricted us because if we did need to repeat any shots it would be hard to keep continuity. Also the location was close and we were able to feel comfortable in the environment we were working in.

Lighting

The lighting for our thriller opening held a importance significance to the whole concept of our opening. this is because we had the lights off during filming with the curtains closed - this was to create a eerie and suspicious atmosphere. We only used a led light during filming, which was shone on myself as I was the actress to emphasise me being a seductive and provocative woman. The led light helped to reinforce the idea that the character was living in darkness and was of a lower class. Also it showed that she lived in a dark atmosphere which also linked in with the personality of which she possessed because she was obsessed with thrillers and the way in which people acted in those thrillers, they became an influence.

Props used
- A white dress which signified innocence and purity
- A purple dress which signified power and dominance
- Homage from Silence Of The Lambs which were the motivational words on the tree - (we used this on the back of the door in picture 3).
- Homage from famous Femme Fatale films posters on the wall from Fatal Attraction, The postman Only Rings Twice and Double Indemnity.
- The trenchcoat, whiskey and cigarette which are iconic Film Noir props.
- Empty photo frames and a upside down clock to reflect on the characters mind state but also to raise questions to the audience
- Red lipstick and red nail varnish to show a provocative and seductive sense but also to show a hint of danger

This picture is of empty photo frames and the upside down clock is deliberately pointed at 12:12. The idea of 12:12 is to signify the characters rigid mind and how precised she is within herself and the way in which she lives her life. The empty frames shows her mind state and the way in which she is mentally empty as is her life because she does not possess much money which is why she transcends into a plot of killing a billionaire who wins the lottery.

This is a picture of myself and my group whilst filming. As you can see it was our very first shot and take which we found very exciting and were determined to see what it is like using the cameras and lighting. As the actress it was a very hard challenge for me to get into character and be able to act appropriately in front of the camera without laughing or smiling. After awhile I was able to compose myself and stay in character which transcended us onto a very productive filming session.
This picture is of the homage we used from Silence Of The Lambs. We took
this idea from the scene of the motivational words on the tree whilst
the girl is running as you can see in the picture above. The reason why we did this is because it links with the criteria we came up with. The idea of using motivational words on the back of the door gave more of an edge to the opening and the way in which the character is. Also

This sub-genre uses physical action to create suspense and emphasis
within the film. It contains physical stunts, chases, fights, battles,
and races. These scenes contribute to the overall sense of danger within
the film. Jason Bourne dodges a ruthless CIA official and his agents from a new
assassination program while searching for the origins of his life as a
trained killer.
The process we used for this was taking single pictures of our storyboard, of the shots we want to film for our Thriller Opening. Using the pictures we took of our storyboard we imported these to Final Cut and made a Animatic. I then exported this to Youtube and here it is:
behind some of the most distinctive UK films of recent years. Also
because forthcoming projects of theirs include supernatural thrillers.
Films they have previously produced include 28 Days Later and The Last
King of Scotland.

Distribution:
UK - Because this is where it will be filmed and will be produced by independent film company.

Germany - Because they have a large English speaking population.

USA
- Because many successful American films are popular in the UK, so to
test whether independent British films can succeed in America. Also
because previous Femme Fatale films were American so the sub genre links back to the original iconic Film Noir movies.

Australia - Again they have a large English speaking population.

China - Their country is very technological so releasing a new film there should produce a widespread audience.

Exhibition:

Our
target audience would be people who favour the thriller genre, but also
who like independent film companies. Our film certificate would
be 15 as the film would feature scenes inappropriate for younger ages.
Social class does not affect our film as it does not relate to any
particular one. However people who are well educated in similar films
will appreciate watching this as they will be able to identify the
homage used in this film. Finally, audiences of an elder age would
benefit more as they would be able to relate to original film noir
movies and point out 'Fatal Attraction' in the background, where as a
younger audience would not be familiar with it.

Aspects our film will contain that certify it as a 15:
-Violence
-Strong language
-Scene of torture

This is an image I screen grabbed from the BBFC website where it distinguishes the differences between each certificate.

Intertexual is between texts where the director of a film liked the idea and incorporated it within their film. This is called Homage; in other words it means paying tribute to the original. Intertexuality is when a director using something that is already existing from something else; things such as borrowing ideas creating a parody.
Generic conventions are regular features which are expected to be in a film depending upon the Genre.

Binary opposites are when two opposites are clashed; Good Vs Evil - Innocence Vs Evil.
Ideology means to have a set of ideas. For instance the idea of Happiness = Material things. Big business are dominant within our society and send us Hedgemonic messages which make us think what they say and present to us is the 'Norm'.

An example of a Hedgemonic message within Film would be the idea of a Ideal Family. Within Film the ideal family would be a Heterosexual couple; married with kids. Having a big Christmas dinner and the situation where the teenage daughter/son has a rebellion with the mother/father. Hedgemonic messages encourage us to accept certain values within society.

Other messages such as white people are seen to be dominant in Film and that Beauty is essential to be successful. Films which give us these Hedgemonic messages are called 'Ideological Films' - repeat things for us to accept a 'Norm'. Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02448519510836898216noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1579410365039606724.post-26973038410371953532012-11-18T06:56:00.000-08:002012-11-18T06:56:42.391-08:00Thriller Moodboard

Also as you can see below I learnt about Generic Conventions; this means that there are certain Conventions that are expected to be in the film according to the Genre of the film.
We also discussed what we thought of each opening and how effective it was to us as the audience and watching them for the first time.

The Seven thrillers that we watched are called:

Misery (1990) - Conventional Thriller

Cube (1997) - Techno Thriller / Horror

No Country For Old Men (2007) - Cop Sub-Genre

Training Day - (Cop Sub-Genre)

Unbreakable - (Supernatural Sub-Genre)

The Hand That Rocks The Cradle - (1992) Psychological Sub-Genre

The Silence Of The Lambs - (Psychological Horror)
What are
the debates around genre?
What is the importance of star association
with a genre?
What can we look for to identify a genre?
What about the triangular relationship?

You could write some bullet points to sum up your responses.

During a lesson we learnt a variety of different genres, we learnt the importance of certain genres such as Thriller and the different groups to Thriller. There are many debates around genre, debates such as what movies are associated with the Thriller genre. However there is not just one type of Thriller Genre, for example there are: Action Thriller, Crime Thriller, Film-noir, Psychological Thriller, Science Fiction Thriller, Religious Thriller.

SUB-GENRES OF THRILLER:

Action Thriller

This sub-genre uses physical action to create suspense and emphasis within the film. It contains physical stunts, chases, fights, battles, and races. These scenes contribute to the overall sense of danger within the film.

Examples: Die Hard, Kill Bill Vol. 1, The Bourne Identity.

Crime Thriller

This sub-genre incorporates suspense and usually center on a serial killer, robbery or manhunt. Crime Thriller's contains physical action but also psychological aspects to build tension and suspense.

Examples: The Usual Suspects, The Fugitive, Jagged Edge.

Film-noir

This sub-genre is a stylistic type of crime-drama or thriller that was popular throughout the 1940s and 1950s. The film would consist of black and white style with stark lighting effects.

Examples: Sunset Boulevard, The Maltese Falcon, Sweet Smell of Success.

Psychological Thriller

In addition to the traits of a regular Thriller, a Psychological
Thriller incorporates elements of drama and mystery film. The suspense
in this sub-genre comes from the mind, rather than from a psychical
threat.

Examples: Memento, Rear Window, Taxi Driver.

Science Fiction Thriller

Science Fiction Thriller incorporates hypothetical, science-based themes
into the plot of the film. Traditionally, a Science Fiction film will
incorporate heroes, villains, unexplored locations, fantastical quests,
and advanced technology.

Examples: Aliens, Inception, District 9.

Religious Thriller

Religious Thriller film incorporates religious themes, including
religious questions, ceremonies, and objects. Though some films can
revolve around a specific church, many Religious Thrillers include
supernatural experiences not pertaining to a certain religion.
Exorcisms, demon possession, and church cover-ups are typical themes of
Religious Thrillers.

Examples: The Devil’s Advocate, The Ninth Gate, The Da Vinci Code.

The importance of star association with a genre is what attracts the audience to the film. An example of star association would be in the movie 'Just Go With It' . This movie contains actress Jennifer Aniston, and Adam Sandler. Both of these actors are Stars within the film industry and because they are extremely high up on the scale them both being in a film together will attract the audience. Also because they will have fans who always watch their films, the promotion for a film containing them both will be immense. Star association allows the audience to be able to recognise the video and will make the film appeal more to the audience, the public and fans.
You will consider and explore:
• How does the opening engage/create interest for the audience?
• Does it establish characters? How?
• Does the opening introduce themes, mood or story/narrative? How?
• How are the opening titles displayed?
• How is enigma established?

What you will need to analyse:
• Mise-en-scene;
• Use of soundtrack;
• Use of diegetic sound;

SCREENSHOT 1

The opening of this film engages and creates interest for the audience because of its immediate beginning. By this I mean it straight away begins a scene of a man sitting and lighting a cigarette (SCREENSHOT 1). This immediately grasps the audience and engages interest because they are observing this happening and will want to start guessing and want to watch more of it to find out what the film will be about. The opening does establish the first man who the audience see's in some way. The reason why is because this man is sitting in a sort of warehouse smoking (SCREENSHOT 1) - and in (SCREENSHOT 2) he is lighting a line of oil across the floor. He appears very suspicious and has a 'don't care' attitude and also shows no remorse for himself or the body that is on the floor. As for the themes, mood and story/narrative - this is introduced slightly. Themes for starters is introduced in the very beginning (SCREENSHOT 1), where the audience can take a guess that the film's theme will be action or thriller. Furthermore as for the mood of the opening/film this is shown in (SCREENSHOT 5,6 AND 7) - because the man is just a figure throughout the opening and the audience do not see him at all, besides from his black coat and his hand. This creates a very intense and mysterious mood which engages the audience more. Lastly the story/narrative is introduced from (SCREENSHOT 7 - 12) this is because from 01:55 - 02:57 the 'unknown' figure sets alight the warehouse in which they are in after shooting the man whom he was conversing with. Enigma is established through the 'unknown' man. This is because the audience are completely unaware of who he is and why he appeared all of a sudden (SCREENSHOT 4), exchanged a few words with the other man (SCREENSHOT 5 & 6) and then kill him (SCREENSHOT 7) and set the building alight, then escaping (SCREENSHOT 10 - 12). This causes mystery and puzzles the audience hugely. Also at the very beginning the man (SCREENSHOT 1) is sitting in a building lighting a cigarette and looks as if he is completely drained. This is unusual and therefore is where enigma is established.

Mise-en-scene in this opening would be the building in which the scenes take place. The arrangement of the building such as the boxes and ropes and stairs appear to be warehouse materials, also cylinders of oil are leaking in the building. This sort of scenery and properties represent the place where this opening was enacted because of the way in which they are dangerous equipment to be near and it is very risky if you do. It links with the scenes that happen during this opening (SCREENSHOT 1-12) because of the way in which the actors use their surroundings and scenery as part of their acting and scenes. The use of the soundtrack from 00:30 - 02:49 is very effective. This soundtrack used causes the audience to feel the tension rising as the opening progresses. Also the way in which the soundtrack is made louder at specific points in the opening emphasizes how important and drastic these points are. Diegetic sound is used during the part where the 'unknown' man is walking down the stairs and approaching the man sitting on the floor (SCREENSHOT 4) his footsteps are sounded as well as the soundtrack. Also the gunshots (SCREENSHOT 7) are a good use of diegetic sound. Lastly diegetic sound is used in the very last part of the opening where police sirens are sounded, these sounds used are highly effective and gave the opening more suspense and character. The camera shots used in (SCREENSHOT 3) was panning and in (SCREENSHOT 4) it was a closeup of the ropes but also you can see the man figure in the background. The movement and positioning of the camera were effective throughout because of the way in which the camera was used to not confuse the audience but to show them difference parts of the building in which this was taking place, this gave the audience a slight image in their minds of what the scenery looked like which would enable them to be more engaged to the film. Last but not least the use of special effects in (SCREENSHOT 12) was highly effective because of the way in which the explosion looked very real and very intense, this would have grasped the audience immediately and almost permanently because of its dramatic sense.
• How does the opening engage/create interest for the audience?
• Does it establish characters? How?
• Does the opening introduce themes, mood or story/narrative? How?
• How are the opening titles displayed?

SCREENSHOT 1

Enemy of the State opens with a black screen and white writing - one reason for this could be that the director wants the audience to feel as if they are watching a computer screen or confidential file as this is a spy thriller. Another way the director engages and creates interest for the audience early on, is by the music that is used; the music that is used is very suspicious and engages the audience's attention immediately as it was very loud and the volume of the music fluctuates during the titles. The opening of this clip does establish the characters because it immediately goes into a shot of the man and his dog as you can see in SCREENSHOT 2. The character is established because the shot is of the man and his dog coming out of a car; however, in this shot the character is not clearly established and is still a tad vague in that you can't really see his face. Nevertheless this creates an enigma because the audience wants to know what this person looks like. The audience do get a rough idea of what sort of character the man may be - the audience may even think that he is a friendly character as people who own dogs are seen to be those who are more gentle and kind. The opening introduces story/narrative and themes. For example in SCREENSHOT 3 the shot is of one of both characters, the man who left the car with a dog on the bench and the man who called him standing nearby the bench. This shows some sort of dominance by the man on the bench because the other man is wanting to sit with him. However it can also be seen that the man standing has dominance because he has a higher level.

The genre could be political because of the conversation the men have together on the bench where they are both conversing about the 'state' and about a situation. This also brings the mood and story/narrative - the mood being suspicion and tense and the story/narrative being about some sort of mission or job that either of the men have to do. As I previously mentioned, the opening titles in this clip as shown in SCREENSHOT 1 are in a white font and medium sized with a background. This idea of the story/narrative being political will reinforce the idea that the audience were watching the computer screen in the beginning. The colours used give an edge to the opening because black and white are seen to be colours that cause suspense and are used when emphasis is needed. The enigma is established by SCREENSHOTS 3,4,5,6,7,8,9 and 10. The reason why the enigma is established here is because this is where the audience observe the main part of the opening where when the men converse they talk about the situation occuring and it becomes more intense when the man leaves with his dog as he is attacked by a group of people and killed and put into his car as you can see in SCREENSHOT 10. The amount of questions that the audience would want to ask are insurmountable.

The mise-en-scene in this opening from SCREENSHOT 2 - 10 is done in such a way, for example in SCREENSHOT 4 the character has glasses and a scarf on and also a jacket. The background consists with trees and they are seen to be mysterious and to cause tension. Also SCREENSHOT 3 the landscape behind both characters is arranged in such a manner; having the men placed in that way enhances the importance of the landscape because it is quite mystical and mysterious which is the feel the audience are recieving from watching the opening. The use of the soundtrack from 02:53 - 04:00 is highly effective, it is used in this way, that it causes real suspense and tension for the audience. The soundtrack used is notifying the audience that something tragic is about to occur and the soundtrack emphasises that by the use of violins within the soundtrack; this is orchestral music and is very high cultured. It commences off slow and gradually builds as the scene of where the man is killed (SCREENSHOT 9) begins to transcend.

The soundtrack is used very effectively and gives the opening that extra edge to it. There is some use of diegetic sound during the part where the man is asking the other man for a favour (SCREENSHOT 4). The diegetic sound used is very effective and is a sort of low mellow sound of a violin increasing, and also the sounds of chimes or bells which make it sound quite sinister; this is because chimes and bells are also part of orchestral music. The camera shots, movement and position used were very unique and original for example in SCREENSHOT 4 and 5; it is the 180 degree rule which is very successfully used. Also in SCREENSHOT 2,6 and 9, panning is used to capture the movement. The position of the camera in SCREENSHOT 9 is very effective and is a close up of the mans face which creates emphasis on the situation and gives the audience a sense of fear and makes them question what else is about to occur.
